This nice early little rag stuffed doll has an ink/pencil drawn face with a faint wavy hairline across the top of her forehead. Her body is all original and she is firmly stuffed with rags. Her outfit is age appropriate and I have lost her tag so I don't know about her clothes but they are age appropriate, I did add her hat. She is fully jointed and sits nicely. With a petite little body this wonderful little doll can fit almost anywhere. She is C.1880 and is 14" tall.

Not all black dolls have black bodies. Some of the best dolls I have had were dolls that the maker took an old rag doll and gave the doll a black head. In the Jim Crow era, it became common in the north for mothers to teach their children about the plight of African Americans, by making a black doll for them. So mothers even ones that were not really skilled at sewing were making black dolls. Putting a black covering over a rag doll was one of the easiest ways...

This big doll no nonsense painted face doll with kind eyes was made with a body and face that match. They are both strong looking, will withstand a lot and be a good companion for a little girl. She is the kindly auntie that can't be there all the time. She is stuffed firmly with rags with cotton stuffed arms and legs. The paint is more a water color than an oil paint. It is flat color and sinks into the fabric. Her lips are the only exception, they are painted with a bittersweet oil paint...

This doll is the first kind of cloth dolls that started to come to market in the 1970's. There were not many cloth dolls in shops or at shows but when I found them they were sort of like this. Simple and straight forward. She has the early hour glass figure and adding to that look is a serious leather corset that was probably made from the top of an old shoe. She is hand sewn, cotton stuffed rather firmly, nicely shaped feet, one nice leather shoe over black stockings...

Boy dolls are just hard to find, fewer were made but when found they are more likely to have good clothes. Boys liked policeman, soldiers, construction workers and sailors. This great sailor is 21" tall, has a nicely embroidered face, is all hand sewn, has the four seam head and has really nice hands with fingers and thumbs. He is very firmly stuffed with cotton. His clothes fit him perfectly...

Very early black cloth doll with embroidered face, raised nose, wool fabric for hair, and dressed in original blue calico roller print pants, an early brown wool vest, (so great even though it has some damage), and the collar around his neck that is all that is left from his dress shirt. His arms maybe an early replacement. He is 14" tall and C. 1870. His face is mottled color but no damage to the fabric, maybe the early dyed fabric reacted to sun over the years.

This is a very nice pen wipe black doll made with a wishbone. She has layers of flannel skirts with wish bone legs wrapped with black cloth. She is 3" tall with an embroidered face and knotted black yarn hair. On the front of her she has a sticker that reads, Wipe your pen on me. She is in excellent condition, no one ever used her, 3" tall and circa 1880.

This doll has a dynamic face with bright blue eyes and long eyelashes. She has great hands with lovely long fingers and thumbs. She is uncomplicated all one piece of fabric in back and in front. She isn't jointed but she does sit. She has normal length arms but when I photograph here with her clothes on they look short. I don't get it is what it is. (See pictures with her clothes off.) She came bald but with evidence of a wig. I plunked one on her but it is just pinned on...

A very nice antique black cloth doll with a wonderful embroidered face. She has knotted wool hair pulled through heavy foundation fabric. Her head is round and very hard, her chest is very firm also. Her hips are wide but cotton stuffed as well as her legs. She is very interesting and I can't exactly tell how she was made but I think she is all original and has stockinette and fabric combined in her making. Her dress doesn't come off. She is 17" tall, she sits easily...

This little doll antique pencil face doll is made out of wonderful homespun linen. She has a sturdy body that is not jointed but sits after years of being plunked down. She is dressed in a flannel brown skirt and a flannel top with a drawstring at the neck. She has pantaloons that button to the top. She has a color and a lace bonnet and little black leather shoes. She is circa 1890 and is 15" tall.

Folky hand made antique paper doll dresses about 6" tall. (They didn't come with a doll.) They are made with fancy paper and glue. I show the backs of the dresses and the fronts. There are four dresses, two jackets, one hat and one apron. They are the last quarter of the 1800's. I there are two dress that have partial tears on a arm. They are from the last quarter of the 1800's. Condition is used and scuffed and played with.

Early, old, adorable button eyes, embroidered mouth, and was flannel I think. Rover is so worn that the fabric is flat. He has a not so great mend on one side of him. He is not fragile at all so maybe he was hurt in some way rather than from old age and being worn out. 7" long and 6" high. C. 1880

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn, The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn. Where is the boy who looks after the sheep? He’s under the haystack, fast asleep. This is an uncut pattern for making a doll, Little Boy Blue. It is late 19th C. It is in very good unused condition but does have some age toning. The colors are crisp as is the fabric. It has been folded and put away for most if not all of its life...

Surprisingly this is and always has been a bottle doll door stop. She is beautifully dressed with layers of clothes. She has flax hair, and ink drawn face with a bit of a startled look. She has on a black hat with great posies across the front. I have had a few white doll doorstops but this is by far the best. She is 15" tall and is circa 1890.

Painted cloth face that has the look of leather. She has a pinched nose and pinched mouth and embroidered with red floss. She has boton eyes and great twisted brown string hair. She is an early doll and night have two other faces under this one. Her body is very firmly stuffed with cotton. She is all hand sewn, sits nicely, and sewn on two layers of socks and great early hand sewn leather boots. The dress is age appropriate but not original. She came from Maine and is circa 1880 and is 20" tall

This lovely painted face cloth doll has a shyness about her. Her eyes are really well painted and kind of talk to you. She has a very nice hand sewn body. Her face is framed with painted brownish red curls. She is all original including the paint on her face. She does have some thinning of the paint and a little loss but nothing serious. This tiny bisque fully jointed doll just 2" long has a beautiful little painted face with bright blue eyes, rosy cheeks, blond hair and even blond eyebrows. She is covered with a tan satin with an embroidered edge done in yellow floss. She is a needle keep with a pincushion at the end that acts like a pillow for her when it is folded up. Pencil face cloth doll is 21” tall, with a big lollipop head that can nod back and forth just a little. She has a firmly packed body with attached arms and continuous legs that do bend for sitting a lot over the years. It is a bit of a forced sit. She has a curved body in at the waist and would at the hips and chest. She has black sock and red boot shoes that have been sewn on and I think are original.
