This is a beautiful wax over Paper Mache doll with pupiless glass eyes. She has a beautiful face with some loss of paint and some repaint. She has a break at the back of her shoulder plate. The good news is she is 23" tall and has on a very nice but fragile period dress and pantaloons. Her face is beautiful and does not look repainted or damaged until you get close. She is from the 1830-40's and looks wonderful sitting in an early period chair. She is priced accordingly to her overall condition...

This large antique black doll has embroidered face with beads for her eyes and mouth, I have never seen this before on a black doll. Her nose I think is would and covered with embroidery floss. He eyebrows are raised also with the use of the same embroidery floss as the nose. She has the lambs wool astrakhan hair. The fabric on her face is a fine silk wool that has shredded on her cheeks but there are several layers of cloth under it so it isn't so obvious...

This is a sweet faced little cloth doll with a pinched raised nose, button eyes, feather stitched eyebrows and pink floss mouth. I think she was a white doll first and covered about 1910 with black sateen, see picture of her legs. She has a sturdy body, simple arms and legs that do bend for sitting. She has on a blue calico dress, a red white and blue patriotic skirt over it and sewn on red felt boots that are quite remarkable. She is 16" tall and is circa 1890...

Funky old embroidered face, button eyed, black cloth doll. Antique cloth dolls feel old as well as looking old. The stuffing, whether it is rags or cotton, should feel compact, not spongy like polyester filling or with raw wool is should have a little give but not much snapback. This doll is a good example of not only looking but feeling really old. She is stuffed with cotton and is quite firm with no snapback. Her body is all continuous so sitting is a struggle...

This tiny bisque fully jointed doll just 2" long has a beautiful little painted face with bright blue eyes, rosy cheeks, blond hair and even blond eyebrows. She is covered with a tan satin with an embroidered edge done in yellow floss. She is a needle keep with a pincushion at the end that acts like a pillow for her when it is folded up. The sewing roll is 6" long including the doll and is 1 1/4" wide. The satin is wearing where her body and feet are but it hasn't broken through...

And I believe her! She is a no nonsense doll, stern but not mean. At 27" she sits and stands tall, her body is strong and firm and her head is upright. She is fully jointed and has fingers and thumbs. Her hands are unique, the maker sewed the outline of the fingers with the two pieces of cloth face out and then cut around the outside so there is a raw cut that is a bit messy looking but it worked. Certainly much easier that sewing on the wrong side pushing the fingers out...

This is a very interesting doll. Her body and head are one piece of solid wood, with a hole straight through the shoulder from side to side with arms pushed in an anchored on either side. The legs, I am not sure how they are attached and the pants over her legs are sewn on and have been for a long time, see stains from the wood on the white tightly woven pants, they feel very secure. She has on a period dress that I think I put on her a long time ago with the apron over it...

I think she is one tough cookie. Very stern with a small little straight line for a mouth, long straight pinched nose and big button eyes outlined in red floss. She has astrakhan hair, a nice early shaped body, jointed at the shoulders and hips and packed firmly with cotton. The dress is sewn on and fits really well. It is silk and a little fragile around the top of the sleeves where it is gathered and puffy...

This dynamic painted face black stockinette doll is a sturdy as you get. She has a solidly packed rag body and head that is really heavy. Under the black stockinette body, her body is covered old blue and white ticking as well as her attached arms and legs. Her hair is two tone crocheted string and yarn. This antique handsewn doll has the early sloped shoulders, with carefully pieced construction, finely embroidered face with pinched raised nose, detailed lips, eyes and eyebrows. Her body is the hourglass shape, her legs are continuous and even though she is not jointed, she sits easily. She has great astrakhan hair. This fine black doll is in wonderful condition. Her face is embroidered and her eyes are jet buttons that are very effective and her hair is astrakhan (lambs wool used for trim on coats in the late 1800's). This is a very nice 19th C. black cloth doll with strong embroidered face. She is as found and is wearing an antique plaid dress that is all hand sewn, with a very fine wool petticoat under it and knit bloomers. Her body is stockinette that is over black cotton lining and she is firmly stuffed with cotton. Her arms and legs and knees are jointed. A sweet little rag stuffed doll with a suggestion of a face. She has on aearly blue and white dress, not original but my guess it has been on her a long time. She is C. 1880-90 and 11" tall with the dress adding another inch or two.

This doll looks right. She is hand sewn, rag stuffed with some cotton stuffing, very big folky mitten hands and the best brown and red calico dress. She had lots of patina, (the very nice word for accumulation of dirt and soil over the years). She has on a flannel petticoat under her dress and a pair of bloomers on inside out. This lovely painted face cloth doll has a shyness about her. Her eyes are really well painted and kind of talk to you. She has a very nice hand sewn body. Her face is framed with painted brownish red curls. She is all original including the paint on her face. She does have some thinning of the paint and a little loss but nothing serious. This doll couldn't get much cuter. She is a tight package, stuffed with cotton, the clothes fit her perfectly, figuratively and otherwise. Her face is made as a separate piece of fabric like it was a second face but after looking carefully at her I think it is her original face and it was how she was made. Here are two very small Civil War dresses measuring just 20". They are all hand sewn, the fabric is wool and silk I think, and as fine and thin as tissue paper. It is amazing that even though the have been worn and have a couple little mends, they look almost new. The fabric is strong with no shredding or signs of wear. They look wonderful hanging. C. 1860's.

This lovely antique black cloth doll with a simple pencil face is stuffed with rags. I can't remember ever having another black doll with a pencil face.
