I think red is her favorite color, it becomes her. She is 24" tall but she is slight in stature so she doesn't feel or look that big. She has a painted face with the best smile. She has astrakhan hair but it is missing on the top, I am surprised she isn't wearing a hat. She is made with sateen cotton and her nose is applied and looks like it has been recovered with floss. She is cotton stuffed and is very nicely made and hand sewn...

This nice antique cloth doll has the eighteen hundreds straight red embroidered line for a mouth that allows her to have many or no emotions. She has two dots for a nose but the mother went the extra length to put stuffing under to give her a raised nose. She has really nicely embroidered eyes with little stitched eyelashes on the top lids. She has astrakhan trim hair that is firmly stitched on. She has jointed arms and the knees are stitched to bend so she sits easily...

This is a big blue/green heavy Amish doll, cotton and rag stuffed, solid doll with a "no no" face that I am sure came later. It is a naïve pencil or ink drawn face and has a nice look but her face was originally blank. Her body, head, and legs are all the same blue/green fabric but her arms are off white linen. They may or may not be original. Her dress is brown with a gray coverall apron and on her head is the traditional black bonnet. All the clothing is from the same era as she is 1890/1900...

This big lollipop head black cloth doll with her sweet hand made dress and two buttons for eyes still manages to have a persona. She has a stuffed cotton body, jointed arms and legs, stitch defined fingers and large feet pointing left. (When I see that my mind thinks, she is signaling for a left turn.) Her red dress has little red trim around the bottom and around her neck. She is 19" tall but doesn't feel like a big doll. She is a funny little character, as found. Circa 1890-1900

This little doll antique pencil face doll is made out of wonderful homespun linen. She has a sturdy body that is not jointed but sits after years of being plunked down. She is dressed in a flannel brown skirt and a flannel top with a drawstring at the neck. She has pantaloons that button to the top. She has a color and a lace bonnet and little black leather shoes. She is circa 1890 and is 15" tall.

This terrific late 1800's hand sewn black doll is about as straight forward as you will find. The embroidered face is really nicely done with the stitched mouth slightly turned down. I think of him as a boy but it could easily be a girl. I bought this doll years ago and there were no clothes. I have tried this and that but I like it just as it is without clothes. I think this doll makes a statement without adornment. He is 16" tall and stuffed firmly with rags...

A most unusual black doll that has her name and owners initials written in brown ink on her bloomers. R.W. is on her right leg and DINA is on her left leg. Her face is nicely embroidered with lover's knots for pupils. She has brown floss hair that is just across her forehead, something I don't recall seeing before on any other doll. She is jointed at the shoulders and hips so she sits easily. I do feel her clothes are original...

This lovely painted face cloth doll has a shyness about her. Her eyes are really well painted and kind of talk to you. She has a very nice hand sewn body. Her face is framed with painted brownish red curls. She is all original including the paint on her face. She does have some thinning of the paint and a little loss but nothing serious. The back of her head is another story...

This 13" needle sculpture painted black doll is so much nicer than most. Someone spent a lot of time hand sewing and painting her features. She has ears and yarn hair sewn on but spotty at this point. She has a curvy little stockinette body. Her homespun, (really homespun) butterscotch checked dress even has a pocket in it...

What a face, a skilled hand embroidered this great face and body. She is what she is, pretty amazing. The embroidered face with applied nose, stitched eyes with snaps for pupils, and an abundance of black yarn hair show the skill of the maker. She is firmly stuffed with cotton, fully jointed and intricate hands with separate fingers and thumbs. Her clothes were made for her and fit perfectly. She has no condition problems, probably she was made as a Sunday doll, carefully played with. She is 21"...

Talk about an hour glass figure, this one is an exaggeration, you can see she has been carried around gripped at the waist and I little hand could have gone around her easily. She is heavy and stuffed with rags. She has a suggestion of facial features. Her dress is hand sewn and not by a skilled dressmaker, it is very endearing and fits her really well. Under her dress she has a very soft worn and age related stained petticoat that has been altered to fit her perfectly and I don't think it is a ...

This big doll no nonsense painted face doll with kind eyes was made with a body and face that match. They are both strong looking, will withstand a lot and be a good companion for a little girl. She is the kindly auntie that can't be there all the time. She is stuffed firmly with rags with cotton stuffed arms and legs. The paint is more a water color than an oil paint. It is flat color and sinks into the fabric. Her lips are the only exception, they are painted with a bittersweet oil paint. She...

Very nice Beecher doll by a cottage industry in Elmira NY missionary group from 1893 to 1910. They followed a pattern but each doll is just a little different as the sewing was a group project.. This one has been recovered with black fabric over the original brown fabric. The brown fabric was not that sturdy and is often in fragile condition. She is wearing a red calico dress but probably not original. She is 20" tall

This doll looks right. She is hand sewn, rag stuffed with some cotton stuffing, very big folky mitten hands and the best brown and red calico dress. She had lots of patina, (the very nice word for accumulation of dirt and soil over the years). She has on a flannel petticoat under her dress and a pair of bloomers on inside out. Why they are like that I don't know but they look okay like that. Her shoulders are jointed but her legs are not but she sits from years of sitting. She is 13" tall and a ...

This doll has attitude and I can see some little scrub kneed kid with this doll under his arm, thinking he can conquer the world. I would like to meet the woman that made this one! This doll is the first kind of cloth dolls that started to come to market in the 1970's. There were not many cloth dolls in shops or at shows but when I found them they were sort of like this. Simple and straight forward. She has the early hour glass figure and adding to that look is a serious leather corset that was probably made from the top of an old shoe. She is hand sewn, cotton stuffed rather firmly, nicely shaped feet, one nice leather shoe over black stockings. Her arms stop abrubtly at ...

Antique firmly stuffed country rag doll with a pencil face. She has pointy little arms and feet pointing to the left (going to make a left turn) and attached legs so she sits nicely. She has on a blouse, pantaloons, petticoat with lace trim, black socks that are sewn on and a wonderful flannel skirt with red trim. She is 14" tall and circa 1880-1890.

Naïve but nicely painted face doll with great red curls around her face. She is 21" tall and her body has a very broad chest that narrows into a smaller waist and hardly any flare to her hips. She is jointed at the shoulders and at the hips. She is very firmly packed with cotton. She has reinforced stitches at her neck below her chin and then stitches at the back of her neck also. She sits nicely and she knows that she is pretty. Circa 1890.
