The mother making this doll was a no nonsense woman. She made a doll with heavy cloth and then painted it with oil paint, several coats I am guessing, and stitched her with cord rather than thread. See how the cord is sewn at her neck and at hands and feet. I don't know how she could get a needle through it. I give her credit she did an outstanding job. Everything about her is heavy and sturdy. Her face is ink and thinner than the paint so her face has faded a little over time but it is still pl...

Great big striking black cloth doll with an embroidered face, sewn by a pro. She has expressive eyebrows, big eyes, no nose, (that is one way to deal with hard to do noses), and a happy smiling mouth. She has very soft lustrous real pelt fur hair. Her arms and legs are jointed, her body is big and rounded, her head moves but is stable and holds itself up, and the stuffing is medium firm. She is wearing, oldish panties, very nice antique petticoat, a black and red polka dot antique dress and an o...

I have owned this doll for 30 or more years and I never found the right clothes for him and I like his looks without clothes. When I took the pictures today of him I suddenly thought, maybe it is a her and not a him. I am not sure and I guess it doesn't matter, I still like the doll without clothes. Roben Campbell made me appreciate the doll bodies when she exhibited my black cloth dolls collection at our local Historical Society. For that exhibit she researched black cloth dolls and then made a...

She is all cleaned up and ready to take a walk. She has peaches and cream complexion to go with her auburn hair. Her body is firm and pretty much unyielding, no sitting around for her. The blue check dress fits her very nicely and age appropriate. She is in good condition with just one little hole on the side of her chin. The pictures make it look huge but that is because she is magnified by the camera. The hole is a 1/4" hole. She is from 1910-20's, is 12" tall and looks very sweet.

Wonderful and unusual leather black doll that is cuddly to hold. Even though she only has a blouse and skirt and pantaloons that are all sewn on, her body is stuffed with cotton with just the right amount to make her feel like there are layers and layers of clothes. Her body is made from a suede leather glove as are her arms and legs. She has a beautiful little painted face that is still good and very visible. Her lace bonnet has been pulled up and down but doesn't come off. Her arms and legs ar...

This is a very interesting doll. Her body and head are one piece of solid wood, with a hole straight through the shoulder from side to side with arms pushed in an anchored on either side. The legs, I am not sure how they are attached and the pants over her legs are sewn on and have been for a long time, see stains from the wood on the white tightly woven pants, they feel very secure. She has on a period dress that I think I put on her a long time ago with the apron over it. Her painted face is ...
A very nice leather and linen Native American doll said to be from Montana. Her leather pumpkin head has a drawn ink face, the top of her head has black stitches that has secured black hair at sometime in her life. Her leather dress has a purple and blue circles along the bottom of her dress just above the cut leather fringe and another of the same on the top of her dress both in the front and the back. She has hand sewn shoes/ moccasins that are very cute. She has been gently played with, shows...
I love bodies made with mattress and pillow ticking, and when it is brown ticking it is even better. I think this was meant to have a china or bisque head aand I don't think that ever happened. I do not see any area that looks like a head was attached other than this old linen pencil face head. The head sort of landed on the body if you know what I mean, it doesn't really look like it belongs but the doll probably wore a dress for most of her life and the body never showed. I like the body bette...
She has signs of wear but for her age she has been well taken care of and probably has packed away for years. I call this pristine doll, a Sunday doll. More often than not, Sunday dolls were china and bisque and were kept on a shelf or under a dome and played with on Sundays either at church gatherings or to keep a child busy while older folks talked. She has button eyes, embroidered face, a firmly cotton packed body, jointed arms and legs and sits very nicely. Her pink calico dress is over a sl...

This little girl is going out in the world with her eyes wide open. Her eyes are buttons with 4 embroidered rings around the outside that gives her a big wide open eye look. She has the straight neutral mouth and white raised thread ending in two red dots for her nose. She is stuffed with cotton and soft enough that her continuous body/arms/legs, bend easily. Her dress is a cotton print in green and beige design with an apron over and pants under. She is a very nice quiet looking little doll. 1...

This wonderful homespun horse with shoe button eyes, funny little ears a great curly mane and no rips or tears. The harness has had a rough time of it but I think it is amazing there is as much left as there is. He never had anything attached to his feet. He seems to be complete and sure is adorable. He is circa 1890-1910. 7" long and 5 1/2" tall.

Isn't he the cutest! He stands 10" tall, has a velvet face, googly eyes and looks to be all original. He has velvet face and the same velvet for his hands and for the top of his boots. He stands when leaning against something and doesn't sit. His arms move easily but his legs are rigid. He is stuffed with something that is hard as a rock but I needle goes in easily so it isn't wood but it feels that hard. His body, arms and legs are mohair. He is in very good condition, life has been kind to him...
This is a doll that says pick me up and carry me around. She has a great naive ink drawn face, has a suggestion of hair with ink lines around her face looking like bangs. I think she wore a bonnet or hat for a while as her head is a little lighter than her face. She has rounded off arms with ink lines for fingers and black stockings sewn on with red embroidery resembling shoe laces. It is a very good and easy way to make her look like she is wearing shoes. She is stuffed with cotton, rather firm...

This little girl in jammies is just 10" tall, is all hand sewn, has a rattle or sound box sewn inside the back. She has bald head, pencil drawn down turned mouth, U shaped nose, pencil eyebrows, and the best embroidered bright blue eyes that jump right out at you. I would let her stay up another half hour with that cute look on her face.
She is circa 1920-30
This is a very interesting black doll. At first I thought she was a make-do with a face recovered but no, she was made this way. This is a good example of the dilemma that women faced when making a black cloth doll. Black was not an everyday color so the rag bag wouldn't have volumes of black cloth. Here she used the small amount of black she had and then used the brown material for the rest of the body that wouldn't show. The black and brown fabric are in the same seam going up the arm and the ...

This is a sweet little pencil face doll, packed firmly with cotton, is jointed at the shoulders and hips. She has put-together-clothes. She has a very nice onesie, the a early petticoat and the a yellow calico blouse and a calico trimmed apron. She is play with condition, but the only real condition issue is that she is missing the end of one hand. She is circa 1880-90 and is 14" tall.
This very early little doll is made with wool batten, (sed as filler in homemade quilts). Probably a scrap left over and in the rag bag. Her body, arms and legs are batten, and her head is sewn linen over a ball of wool batten. Her eyes are tiny beads held on with thread and her nose is raised and stitch defined. Her mouth is 3 stitches with a hint of pink color. She is wearing a real homespun linen dress, red, white and light brown plaid, not fancy but hand sewn. She has on a ribbed fabric lon...

Very early black cloth doll with embroidered face, raised nose, wool fabric for hair, and dressed in original blue calico roller print pants, an early brown wool vest, (so great even though it has some damage), and the collar around his neck that is all that is left from his dress shirt. His arms maybe an early replacement. He is 14" tall and C. 1870.
His face is mottled color but no damage to the fabric, maybe the early dyed fabric reacted to sun over the years.
