This plain and simple stocking doll with great old button eyes and probably original stocking cap. He feels like he is stuffed with soft stocking material. He has fancy blue and maroon yarn tied around his ankles that probably matched his clothes. Simplistic pleasure. He is 14 tall and has a few small holes. He is circa 1910-20

This doll is the first kind of cloth dolls that started to come to market in the 1970's. There were not many cloth dolls in shops or at shows but when I found them they were sort of like this. Simple and straight forward. She has the early hour glass figure and adding to that look is a serious leather corset that was probably made from the top of an old shoe. She is hand sewn, cotton stuffed rather firmly, nicely shaped feet, one nice leather shoe over black stockings...

This doll holds her head up high, has a hint of a smile, has a great body, sits nicely, doesn't cause any trouble and hasn't complained that her dress doesn't have any buttons or quite meet at the neck. She is 21" tall, stuffed firmly with cotton, has no rips or tears. She has embroidered face with shoe button eyes. Her hair is wool and so nicely done. She has pantaloons, petticoat and dress that are all nice and are antique...

Under the great blue calico bonnet this doll has a worn and wrinkle face with a pencil dot for eyes and a pencil line for a mouth. Her nose has gone flat but the bonnet makes her look adorable. She is a homemade beauty, she sits like she has done yoga all her life. Her blue calico dress is voluminous and hides her rather average size body. She can almost do a split her legs go so far apart. She had a slip and undies under her dress and has black socks and brown shoes on...

Antique all rag stuffed stockinette black doll with a face that says she will tell no secrets. She has on what I believe to be her original clothes, a brown and tan check dress with red trim and a bandana apron over it. She has on a petticoat that maybe was a curtain and blue and white ticking underwear. Her face is very plain with shoe button eyes and applied knit fabric for a mouth. Her hair is real fur and is beautifully fitted to her head. She has attached arms and legs...

This is a very nice 19th C. black cloth doll with strong embroidered face. She is as found and is wearing an antique plaid dress that is all hand sewn, with a very fine wool petticoat under it and knit bloomers. Her body is stockinette that is over black cotton lining and she is firmly stuffed with cotton. Her arms and legs and knees are jointed. Her condition shows wear on some of the stockinette and her face has little picky holes that have been sort of mended, see picture...

This lovely antique black cloth doll with a simple pencil face is stuffed with rags. I can't remember ever having another black doll with a pencil face. Usually the material is too dark for a pencil face to show. Her body is all original and hand sewn. Her clothes are as found when I bought her. Her top is a knit long john shirt made for a very young child and her skirt is a wonderful antique skirt in soft shades of brown and blue and yellow and green...

Very unusual painted face character doll with the best laughing eyes. So many dolls are either very pretty or have a very neutral face with a straight line for a mouth, this doll leaves nothing to the imagination, she is down right giddy. How cool is that! She is painted with oil paint on fabric with most of the fabric showing through, not from wear but the way she was painted. She had great painted copper colored hair that is painted in swirls. She has a chunky firmly stuffed with cotton body...

This sweet little black doll has the look of a 24" doll. She is old, her clothes are early, soft and hang nicely. Her leather shoes are original and it is always a mystery of how they get so worn. She has raised eyes and mouth done with layers of yarn. She has a cotton stuffed curvy little body that sits easily. Her yellow dress is a little fragile and the kerchief around her shoulders is old but not as old as she is. She is 13" tall and C. 1890

Sometimes dolls look like they don't want to be wearing fufu but something tells me this doll loves the bow in her hair and bustle on the back of her skirt...

Little Miss Sunshine has a delicately painted face with eyes that look so good I could swear they were glass eyes until I touched them. The are an amber color with a bit of a twinkle. Her nose is a little horizontal line and her mouth is a little pink painted open mouth smile. Her body is continuous from head to toe and her arms are attached. She is stuffed very firmly with cotton so much so that she has popped a gusset and sprung a leak at her neck. She is very sturdy, no motion to her head or ...

A sweet little rag stuffed doll with a suggestion of a face. She has on aearly blue and white dress, not original but my guess it has been on her a long time. She is C. 1880-90 and 11" tall with the dress adding another inch or two.

Little button eyed, embroidered nose and mouth, black doll. She has great early finely woven string hair. her dress couldn't be any simpler, made of broadcloth and covered with a apron. She is cotton stuffed, little blunt arms and legs and is 12" tall. She is all original and from the 1920's. She is perfect is her funny little way.

Talk about an hour glass figure, this one is an exaggeration, you can see she has been carried around gripped at the waist and I little hand could have gone around her easily. This little girl, 15", is all hand sewn, with a chunky cotton stuffed body, jointed arms and legs, embroidered face and button eyes, set a bit askew. She is wearing a little later homemade red and black polka dot dress. There is no evidence that she ever had hair. She has mitten shaped hands with nice thumbs. Very nice Beecher doll by a cottage industry in Elmira NY missionary group from 1893 to 1910. They followed a pattern but each doll is just a little different as the sewing was a group project.. This one has been recovered with black fabric over the original brown fabric. The brown fabric was not that sturdy and is often in fragile condition. She is wearing a red calico dress but probably not original. She is 20" tall

This is another example of a make-do doll. She has a very early body that probably had a china or papier mache head. It was sure easier to just make a cloth head and put it on a doll body that had a broken head than to make the whole doll. She is 24" tall and is firmly stuffed with cotton. The body is 1860 and the head is 1890, pretty cool. She is wearing a early soft red dress and a full slip and a flannel blue and white striped petticoat. She is a real character and her name is Lizzy.

Maude Witherspoon doll made in New Orleans during a period from approximately 1898 to 1915. She has an oil painted face on a cloth head and body. Her body is all original including the wild plaid legs. She is 15" tall and in good condition, having one scrape around her right eye. These dolls are one of a kind and hand painted so every face is different but the same, making them very identifiable. She has on a plaid dress and bonnet that are not original but nice.
