When I first discovered early homemade cloth dolls, it was at local flea markets in the 1970's. I was drawn to them because I liked early textiles and I loved dolls. They were both! I was hooked, at that moment, but there were not many out there. By the 1980's there were pencil face dolls showing up at Brimfield but not in antique shops yet or in doll dealers booths at shows. So all that was to tell you that this doll makes my heart jump because she is the type of doll that was first to surface into the antique world. She has a sweet, heart shaped face, pencil drawn features, the best corn row hair, big mitten hands, big sewn on boots, and a lovely old handsewn dress. Her head is held up straight by an old flexible corset stay imbedded in her back and it does the job. Her hair or, lack there of, is so folky. I think either some little hand with round tipped scissors gave her a haircut, or over 130 years of wear and tear all but a few strands here and there remain. The ribbon is sewn on and then later pins have been put in but it appears to have been there for a long time. She is cotton stuffed
