This dear little doll with her rag strips for hair, a straw hat that has seen better days, a wool hand sewn jacket with moth holes and a red and black calico dress with a petticoat under it are all old but later than the original and really wonderful clothes. The vest and the pants are early and wonderful. The paisley roller print vest with a homespun linen back, is fastened with wooden buttons hand decorated with thread, (floss), in various states of condition, giving the secrets of how the decoration was done. And the pants are made of early homespun green silk and sewn on. This doll was a boy before she was a girl. She has a few mends and the arms have been recovered at least once. The leather hand made shoes are probably original also. This doll is all hand sewn, She is 19" and is circa 1860 She is very special. Partial note attached, even more missing when I got her. The note read, "Father's doll was made as a /little boy/Grandmother/ about 70 years ago/by/Mrs. Bonney" Published: Lakin-Folk Art For Children: Handmade in America 1769-1940, p. 88, F2.47.
