I find it impossible to like only one kind of black doll but even if I tried to think of all kinds, I would never have come up with this one. She is outrageous. She is a little easier to understand once you realize that she has faded. I think the stocking was black and over the years has faded. The back isn't as faded at the front but so you can see the varying colors in the back more so than the front. She has an applied nose, button eyes and no sign of a mouth. Her body started out as a white doll. Her legs are black and on arm is half covered in black and the other arm has lost the covering. She is wearing a brown calico dress. This doll is great in a folk art way. I shake my head and smile every time I look at her and I have owned her for years. She is 24" tall but she doesn't present herself as being nearly that big. I have looked and I don't see another face under this one but I was not aggressive about looking because I wouldn't change her. She has been like this a long time. Circa 1890-1900 with the body about 1880
