This special black doll is what I call a Sunday doll. Made by an experienced seamstress around the turn of the 19th C. It was made to be enjoyed by children and adults and probably not to be played with. A child would be allowed to hold or have it sitting in their bedroom. Starting at the top of her head, her hair is made of a fabric that is soft as angel hair and looks like hair. The bun at the back I think is a large coat button covered with the same material. Her face is embroidered with strong eyebrows, embroidered eyes including buttons, applied nose with nostrils and rosy red lips. Her face is black sateen, her body is strong durable cotton. Her hands are an oilcloth cut to the shape abd decorated with a flower design that is nearly all worn off. It is not unusual to have a black doll with a white body. Black fabric was not as accessible or used as often and when areas didn't show anything available was used. I have checked her with a black light and opened a seam to find she is two layers of fabric and is stuffed with natural unprocessed raw wool and everything is old and right. Her shoes are made from the same material oilcloth and the have shoebuttons holding the strap. This is an exceptional black cloth doll. 24" tall circa 1890-1900
