This is one big heavy old doll that has seen a lot of playtime. She is 33" tall, has big mitten hands, startling blue eyes and a faintly painted mouth. The maker 0f this doll was a no nonsense person, big stitches and big cord string instead of thread. Mostly it has lasted for over 100 years, She has on a soft, old pink and white cotton dress with an antique slip under that. She looks great in a chair. What a doll. Circa 1890

This doll again is out of a large collection that I just bought. She just as she came out of the house. She is 23" tall, big blue eyes. shaped face so her nose protrudes a little and one line that turns down a little for the mouth. Her face shows age and craqueleur paint surface but it feels stable and is not flaking. Around her chin, in the photos, it looks like some over painting but I have used a black light and it doesn't show any other paint. It could be a child tried feeding her and then t...

This rag stuffed black doll is from the early 1900s. Her face is two layers of stockinette with an embroidered mouth, pinched nose and button eyes. She has on and old print dress that has been on her a long time, a red wool petticoat, a knit undershirt that comes down to her knees, and knit pantaloons. She has what I call east west feet with brown knit socks sewn on. The stitching on the socks is such that they resemble laced up boots. She has a curvy hourglass shaped body that is packed full of...

How amazing is this, a stump doll wrapped in butterscotch checked calico with a brown calico bonnet. All she needs is the cradle. The dress is made from a worn out hand sewn calico apron, see picture of the dress pulled up. The stump is all apron. I think she looks like she is from the 1840s but she is later than that more like 1880 judging from the fabric. She is 19" long and never had arms, I think she looks like she is wrapped in a swaddling cloth.

Difficult is her middle name, I plunked her down to take pictures and she has attitude. No matter what I do she is looking at her feet and does not want to cooperate, so there you have. I can't do any better, I think she is better in person and I do think cameras lie especially when they take pictures of me. She is 23" tall, pencil face, black fabric hair, nice relaxes body stuffed with cotton, jointed arms and legs and has stitched defined fingers. No condition problems other than a bad hair d...

Black cloth doll with a interesting painted face. The eyes and eyebrows are done in heavy strong strokes, her nose a little more daintily and then a sweet turn-up at the corners mouth matching the color of her dress. She has a nice hourglass shaped body, legs that also have some shape and arms that are black instead of brown. There are at least two reasons why they are a different color. The obvious is they are replaced and that is not unusual they got dragged around by their arms and they come ...

Her face is embroiderer nicely with brown floss and you can tell she was made by a happy person. 23" tall and C.1890

Oh my, I have owned this doll for a long time. She is a puzzle. I really like her face, the dress was on her and I have left it on because it looks nice but certainly is not original. She is straight forward with a naive painted face, starfish-like hands, big chunky legs but is unusual in the sense that she sits easily, a lot of these big girls don't. But now for the other face... I don't know. It is what it is. It looks professionally painted, why I don't know. It is a happy clown but I think ...

Here is a nice worn velvet cat the color of butterscotch. She has original and very perky ears, bead eyes and red floss nose and mouth. She has lived through one of her lives at least, her tail has been sewn back on. There is an embedded rattle inside of her that adds another nice element. She is very solid, sits nicely and is very well behaved. Almost 5" tall 7" long including her tail.

What a great example of a folky big heavy homemade dog. His face is priceless, shoe button eyes sort of hanging there, a leather nose that dominates the lower half and no suggestion of a mouth. Somehow they eye doesn't notice that it is not there. He is made with a heavy wool twill that was mohair at one time. He has round wooden legs that have broken through the fabric at the top so now and then a little excelsior falls out. His ears are original but they look like he had a fight with a cat, ...

Black dolls are harder than white dolls when deciding how to make a face show up on a black fabric. Often times the features are in red, or white but this face is done with a golden brown floss and it works very well on the black cloth background. She has yarn hair, stitched defined fingers and thumbs. Her arms and legs are fully jointed and mover freely. She has sewn on satin shoes that are the same golden brown as used on her face. She is 15" tall and is C 1910

This feed sack doll is made with two pieces of cloth, one for the front and one for the back of the doll. She has an ink drawn face, and ink hair in the back. If you look carefully at the back of her head a first attempt at drawing a face can be seen. Her body is a classic early recyling example. She is from Maine, is 15" tall and is circa 1920.

This really nice boy doll with great clothes has a finely embroidered face. His face has form with a protruding chin and nose, generous sized ears, string hair and a lovely wool red cap. His velvet jacket fits nicely, the navy blue wool knit knickers and black socks look good and show off the homemade shoes that have to be seen...they are really nice, worn but nice. He is 17" tall and has a forced sit. C. 1890

This is a miniature brown wallpaper box with darker brown polka dots Someone, later on, had fun putting on flower decals that sort of add to the folky appearance. It has a stain on one side and has overall minor scuffing from use and age. This is an example of when sun fading was good. This was a red wallpaper box with gold polka dots and it has faded to a lovely brown. It is 4 1/2" by 3 1/2" by 2 1/4" tall.

This very nice hand-carved wooden doll and some original paint on the face and shoulders. She has a very round head, deep-set eyes and a nose carved and protruding but still out of the one piece of wood. Her legs were inset and pegged in place. Now she is a wonderful fragment 10" tall and mounted on a professional frame. (There are a few very old worm holes, please see close-up picture.) Circa 1800-1830.

I am partial to sister dolls and have been collecting them for years. I have always liked these two. I had dressed them, it is very hard to find two dresses alike as you can imagine and they rarely have their matching dresses 120 years later. No question the same person made both dolls. They are very firmly stuffed with cotton, jointed arms and legs, embroidered faces with that straight neutral red mouth and an embroidered nose done with black floss so it is hard to see. Their hair is the astrak...

"Doll with all original repairs".I read this description somewhere along the way. It makes me smile and yet I know what was meant, the repairs are not recently done and that applies here. I love her brown face and the best blue sewn on bonnet/head/hair. She has an Arnold Print Works arms and bodyand black stockinette legs. Her arms have lost most of the raw wool stuffing. Her head is not the print work fabric but is an old or older component. She is wearing very early silk and wool petticoat in...

This dear little black doll came right out of a house in Tennessee. She has the best thread hair, embroidered face, button eyes, pinched raised nose and lots of little and not so little mends on her face. She has a painted red mouth that can be seen if you look carefully, it is really faded. I have made the mends more visible by lightening the closeup picture but in regular light, they are hardly noticeable. She is firmly stuffed with cotton, jointed at the shoulders and legs. Her body is all or...
