Her cotton stuffed body is all original, the right side of her face has some over paint of pinkish white that is a very old over paint, it doesn't fluoresce, but it doesn't seem to be hiding anything either. a secrets that I guess she isn't willing to give up. This all handsewn little linen doll has the most unusual and expressive embroidered face. A rectangle shaped mouth, fine little stitches for eyes and pupils, curvy stitches for ears and dash lines for hair, all in red floss thread. Jointed arms at shoulders and elbows, and same for the legs, at knees and hips all stuffed fairly firmly with cotton. In this wonderful, finely embroidered face, black doll you can see fatigue. It makes me wonder just who did make this very fine cloth doll. She is wearing a calico skirt under a work apron, with a blouse and a shoulder scarf. On her feet are hand sewn fabric boots. She is jointed, stuffed firmly with cotton, is holding a baby wearing a bonnet and a bow. The baby has a stump body wrapped with fabric and doesn't appear to be something you take out of her arms. Not all dolls that are 17" tall look 17" tall and this in one of those dolls. Her stockinette body, while it is curvy is not big, it is softly stuffed and small around. My index finger and thumb go around her waist and touch. Her face kind of looks embroidered in pictures but it is a really nicely painted. I think she is one tough cookie. Very stern with a small little straight line for a mouth, long straight pinched nose and big button eyes outlined in red floss. Old, worn, hand sewn, holey, patched, replaced arm, and simply wonderful package. She is heavy rag stuffed, has an old curvy body and is wearing a very early handsewn dress that is sewn on. Her animal friend is hand sewn, stuffed sort of firmly, has funny 2nd generation ears and little black floss stitches for eyes. It doesn't need to be complicated to be great. Big bold painted face doll with sewn on original dress, (apron is old but probably not original.) She is soft and floppy even her head, but with a wall behind her the head stays upright. She sits really easily, and is the perfect weight and feel to be carted around. She is 23" tall and circa 1900-1920. Mid-west origin.

A fine embroidered face, bead eye, pelt hair black doll from the coast of Maine. Her face and body are made from a very nice black linen cloth that has lightened a little with age. As found all hand sewn, sepia drawn face, forever clothes, (been on her forever) that are hand made and now in tones of brown. (Skirt has faded from blue to brown in the front.) I call these dolls, relics! They shouldn't be redressed in my opinion but enjoyed for what they are. What do you think, I think she was maybe made with big round eye glasses for an adorable little girl who had glasses just like these? Pair of wonderful cotton knit striped socks the heal hand worked. The colors and mustard yellow, blue and white stripes. Some of the hand sewing in the heal is lose or is partly out. No holes and I doubt they have been worn much at all. 28" long and circa 1880

25 1/2" by 26" red, white and blue neckerchief, hand hemmed with the tiniest of stitches. It is in excellent condition and has embroidered initials LZ in one corner. It came in a textile lot of shaker items. LZ in one corner. Circa 1840

This dynamic painted face black stockinette doll is a sturdy as you get. She has a solidly packed rag body and head that is really heavy. Under the black stockinette body, her body is covered old blue and white ticking as well as her attached arms and legs. Her hair is two tone crocheted string and yarn. This small package of a doll is just perfect in almost every way. I love her sleepy looking eyes, her curvy little body, the leather hands that go all the way to her elbows. The dress with the coverall apron has been on her forever, maybe. All the way down to her feet that have the best little shoes, not original but look so good on her. Her face had another gauzy fabric over it that I cut off, it was full of holes due to deteriation from the tannic acid used to set black dye in the stockinette ...

Sometimes a doll can be appreciated for the marvel of the maker and the caretakers of a doll. She has had loving hands restore her body more than once with really skilled hands. Her body is fashioned like a leather body but there is no leather under this doll's layers of jersey, cotton, linen and maybe a little wool. Her body is so interesting that she would look good exhibited without clothes. She is very firmly stuffed with rags. Her simplistic face is adorable with bead eyes a protruding nose...

Early, old, adorable button eyes, embroidered mouth, and was flannel I think. Rover is so worn that the fabric is flat. He has a not so great mend on one side of him. He is not fragile at all so maybe he was hurt in some way rather than from old age and being worn out. 7" long and 6" high. C. 1880

Sometimes dolls look like they don't want to be wearing fufu but something tells me this doll loves the bow in her hair and bustle on the back of her skirt. She looks like she is all hand sewn, she had material for hair but the mohair is all worn off so it is a nice tan fabric sewn on around her face and covering the back of her head. Her socks are woolen and you can see there is some moth damage. Her feet are nicely formed so the socks could come off. Her body is all original and is not jointed...

So without thinking, she is super wonderful, with a elongated head, stitched onto an equally old body, BIG arms and hands, great old body and legs terminating with old nicely worn high button shoes.
