This bed post doll is made from a very old turned post and she is solid wood up to the top of her head. I think she was always covered with clothes but I could be wrong but I sure don't want to take her apart to find out. She has rolled arms that wrap around her back. She has a pumpkin head, some blue on her face that might have been eyes but doesn't really have a face anymore. She has got on a blouse and then another blouse over it and the lace collar. I can feel that the head is wooden and is ...

I love polka dots and this wonderful black wool hen potholder has red wool trim with black polka dots. She is in excellent condition, is the earliest I have ever had and displays so nicely with or without a little stuffing. She is 5" tall and is 7" from the tip of her beak to the end of her tail. These were usually used on the big kettle lid. They would sit there and the soup that was simmering could quickly be checked all day long. She is circa 1880

This tiny bisque fully jointed doll just 2" long has a beautiful little painted face with bright blue eyes, rosy cheeks, blond hair and even blond eyebrows. She is covered with a tan satin with an embroidered edge done in yellow floss. She is a needle keep with a pincushion at the end that acts like a pillow for her when it is folded up. The sewing roll is 6" long including the doll and is 1 1/4" wide. The satin is wearing where her body and feet are but it hasn't broken through. She is a very n...

This wonderful little painted wooden bowl is special. It is painted with a creamy white paint that really aged and mellowed and could be original. The paint stops a 1/2" from the top. I don't know why. It looks like the rim is painted a different color paint when it is sitting on a shelf but no it is the aged wood showing. The bowl has a big crack and after owning this bowl for a number of years and have it go from dry winter to humid summer I couldn't stand watching it expand and contract to I ...

The calico prints in this early doll quilt are some of my favorites. They are brown and red and are nicely balanced in the design. The quilt is all hand sewn and quilted nicely but with an unschooled hand. There are a few little places along the binding that are fraying just a little. It has been used and washed and loved and it has only made it better. The quilt is backed with another brown and red calico print that is pretty enough to use it on that side also. I love small doll quilts like thes...

This is a nice and early black cloth doll with the greatest face. The maker was skilled with a needle. The embroidered eyes and mouth are done with the tiniest of stitches. Her nose protrudes and is hard like it is wood wrapped in fabric. Two layers have worn on the top of the nose yet there is still a layer of stockinette. She has astrakhan fabric for hair and it has lots of wear. She has the same stockinette for her body, is a very fine dense stockinette. Her body is stuffed firmly, her arms a...

Early sewing pocket from New England made about 1810-1820 has a wonderful selection of early calico materials. It has some repairs and a few spots where the fabric is thin that is to be expected in something this old that was really used. This is a wonderful example. It is by 15" across the bottom to 8" across the top. It appears to have the original ties. Circa 1810-1820

This doll is from a collection in Maine. She is stockinette that was originally early polished cotton and was recovered 50 t0 75 years ago. So she is all original just recovered. This is not that uncommon if the doll was valued it was repaired. Old black fabric dye had iron oxide that was corrosive and weaken fabric. It is why this face has some holes. Her face has beautiful embroidery, the nose has to be the fanciest I have ever seen. She has shoe button eyes and pieces of white linen tacked on...

This big lollipop head black cloth doll with her sweet hand made dress and two buttons for eyes still manages to have a persona. She has a stuffed cotton body, jointed arms and legs, stitch defined fingers and large feet pointing left. (When I see that my mind thinks, she is signaling for a left turn.) Her red dress has little red trim around the bottom and around her neck. She is 19" tall but doesn't feel like a big doll. She is a funny little character, as found. Circa 1890-1900

This early topsy turvy doll very nice appeal to those that like dolls with love patina. Both faces have raised noses and some wear with more on the white side than the black side. The black doll has a window pane red fabric that is a tomato red with yellow lines and the white side has a wonderful blue fabric with white stars. She has had lots of hours of play and the aging from it is just the best. She displays well a single doll with white of black side. There is a tear in the top of the red f...

This is a really nice early 1870 rag doll with an embroidered face. I am partial to the U shaped nose that some early cloth dolls have and this is a nice example. She has black tufted wool eyes and black embroidered eyebrows. Her mouth is a mauve floss with a true to shape lips. Her hair is black velvet and shows nice wear. Her arms are attached but her legs are continuous. Her body is the hour glass shape of the 1800's and is stuffed very firmly with cotton. Her legs bend and she does a forced...

This is a wonderful old blue denim doll body all hand sewn. It is not the modern denim but it is denim and nicely faded and great shade of blue. It is stuffed firmly with cotton. For those of you who don't get it, I understand, but for us that do, this is a great one. We don't make them into dolls, we like them just as they are sitting on a shelf. (I think I hear you laughing.) 19" C. 1880

13" Black cotton doll with oil-painted feature was made by Maud Witherspoon. She founded the manufacturing co in 1905 in order to support her mother and younger sister. She lived in the French Quarters of New Orleans. They are very distinctive and this one has a very lovely face in excellent condition. Her clothes fit her very well and could be original. She is very well made, see pictures. She is circa 1905-1920. This doll is a wonderful example of a Maud Witherspoon doll. (Isn't her name grea...
