At first glance she looks like one to me but a southern belle all dressed up in the 1880's would not ever consider putting forth anything resembling a scowl. To give her the benefit of the doubt it is more of a pensive look. Her bright blue eyes would sparkle with a smile but she is what she is. Her face is watercolor and ink and nicely done. She is 22" tall her body is all original with continuous legs so she has a forced sit, see photos. She is wearing a pink and white calico print dress and a...

She is firmly packed with rags and cotton, how can I tell, she is very heavy and doesn't give much when you squeeze her. Rags are dense and heavy, cotton is lighter and can be pushed more easily into small places like arm and legs and feet and gives more when compressed. She has a great pencil face with eyes way at the top of her face. She is old and played with and her dress reflects all of that, see pictures for shredding material. Her body is all original and her dress is old and came with he...

This little girl has fun and has just met the other one so we will see if they turn out to be good friends. She is heavy and old and is as found with a little rec calico dress, tan undies, tan socks and wool shoes missing the soles. (Odd and I have no idea what could have happened to them.) She has great lambs wool hair. The white that you see is part of the tanned leather. She has button eyes, (the thickest buttons I have ever seen.), applied nose and applied lips with embroidered teeth. She h...

I know that look, it says, I know what you are thinking and you better not say it! I wonder if she knows that I was going to comment on her hair-do? She is hand sewn and has a linen face and body that is cotton stuffed. Her dress looks like it has been on her forever. She has red high top shoes that are sewn on, nice under clothes and real hair that might be original. Her face has a very straight pinched nose, one long of red floss stitch for her mouth and pencil drawn eyes and eyebrows. She is...

This lovely homespun rolled linen doll is lovely in her simplicity. If she had a pencil face there is nothing left now except your imagination. She is all rolled or more the terminology is folded or wrapped. Her arms still show and looked rolled. The bottom half of her legs have been recovered but you can peek underand see the origina homespun leg is still there. Her dress, that looks original, is homespun linen with a mustard yellow hand block printed design that has been pinned probably fairly...

I don't know how a doll can portray a feeling without an expressive face but she does. She clearly owns her space. She is mended and patched and her face recovered a couple of times and still shows wear on the newer coverings. She is big and heavy and is as found and looks great in a country chair in the corner of a room. PS...dont you love those shoes! Out of a collection in the mid-west.

This really unusual black doll is from a Bucksport Maine attic and I am the second owner. There is so much to like about this doll but I want to comment on her dress. I believe it is original to her, it is two piece all hand sewn. The fabric is hand blocked and printed and it is nothing short of esquisit. See one of the pictures where her skirt is pulled up so you can see the back of the material. It is as saturated with the ink as the front. One of the ways you can tell age of a printed fabrid...

Surprisingly this is and always has been a bottle doll door stop. She is beautifully dressed with layers of clothes. She has flax hair, and ink drawn face with a bit of a startled look. She has on a black hat with great posies across the front. I have had a few white doll doorstops but this is by far the best. She is 15" tall and is circa 1890.

This little 1890's cloth doll with a happy pencil face is hand sewn and is wearing simple clothes that are cut and basted together in the most elementary way. She is the kind of doll that got thrown away more often than not but this one survived a lot of spring cleanings and it makes her all the more special. She is circa 1890 and is 11" tall.

This doll looks right. She is hand sewn, rag stuffed with some cotton stuffing, very big folky mitten hands and the best brown and red calico dress. She had lots of patina, (the very nice word for accumulation of dirt and soil over the years). She has on a flannel petticoat under her dress and a pair of bloomers on inside out. Why they are like that I don't know but they look okay like that. Her shoulders are jointed but her legs are not but she sits from years of sitting. She is 13" tall and a ...

I had trouble getting all of her in the picture. It took a while and she loved the attention. She has an oil painted face with dramatic eyes, a small pink lips and a straight nose that is defined more by the center seam than by the paint that is not as easy to see as when it was first painted. Her body is stuffed just right, not too hard with a nice give. She has on an early calico dress that ties in the back. These big dolls are hard to find dresses for they need to be short and wide. This one ...

This is a hand sewn and hand quilted antique doll quilt circa 1850-60. It is random and naïve and very pleasing to the eye. It has been professionally mounted. I love hanging these doll quilts on fronts and backs of doors. (I have run out of wall space!) This one is 16" by 16" and mounted 18" by 18".

All hand pieced and quilted cut corner doll quilt. It has been professionally mounted. There is one spot more noticeable in the picture than in person. The quilt is 17" wide and 19" long. The frame is 19" by 21". This little amazing quilt is out of a local attic a number of years ago. I love hanging these dear doll quilts on fronts and backs of doors. (I have run out of wall space!) This beauty is a one of a kind painted face doll is a great example of a talented mother or aunt hand sewing and painted the fabric on the head and face to provide their child with a doll that strongly resembled the bisque and china dolls found in department stores or bought from Europe. She is beautifully painted with no touch up or repair. She has some slight age discoloration that you would expect from a doll this age. Her body is sound with no splits or breaks. Her underclothes consist of pa...

This bold stockinette black doll is very likely all original. She has a great face that is shaped by the pinched nose and a slightly pinched chin. I don't recall seeing a pinched chin like that before. She has astrakhan hair covered with matching scarves on her head and around her bodice. She has a petticoat and pantaloons and a soft red calico dress over them. Her apron has a pocket with a hanky of the same material as her head and shoulder scarfs. She is well endowed with a matronly body. She ...

What could be better for the country or textile collector than a rare pair of homespun linen pockets outlined with dark brown thread. They are a little bit darker tan than the pictures. The stitches are tiny on all the seams and then as decoration she used a basting stitch that also was utilitarian in fortifying the seams. The shape is the nice older form with an elongated body with more curves. The later pockets more commonly shorter and wider in width with straighter sides. They have their or...
